Rosin is a kind of oil tree resin in the pine family, and its main component is C19H29COOH. It is divided into three types: "gum rosin", "wood rosin" and "floating oil rosin". It is often used as a depilatory by poultry slaughterers. Rosin itself is not very toxic to the human body, but it often contains heavy metals such as lead and toxic compounds. In addition, the industry uses it repeatedly for low cost. The peroxide produced after the oxidation of rosin seriously affects human health, so it becomes a regulated product.
Rosin can be obtained from pine-like tree species around the world, especially longleaf pine, Cuban pine and loblolly pine produced in the southeastern United States. Cuts are made in these trees to distill and extract the highly viscous secretion called rosin. This volatile liquid is turpentine; the remaining hard resin is called rosin.
Rosin is divided into three types according to its source: gum rosin, wood rosin, and floating oil rosin.
Gum rosin, also known as loose rosin, has a light color, a high acid value, and a high softening point;
Wood rosin, also known as leached rosin, is not as good as gum rosin, has a dark color, a low acid value, and is easy to crystallize from certain solvents;
Floating oil rosin is also known as tall oil rosin. Rosin is a transparent, brittle solid natural resin. It is a relatively complex mixture composed of resin acids (abietic acid, pimaric acid), a small amount of fatty acids, rosin anhydride, and neutral substances.
The main component of rosin is resin acid, accounting for about 90%, with a molecular formula of C19H29COOH and a molecular weight of 302.46. Resin acid is the most representative rosin acid, an unsaturated acid, containing conjugated double bonds, strongly absorbing ultraviolet light, and can be automatically oxidized or induced to oxidize in the air. Rosin has a light yellow to light brown appearance, glassy luster, turpentine odor, and a density of 1.060~1.085g/cm3. It is amorphous, has no melting point, softening point (ring and ball method) 72~76ºC, boiling point about 300ºC (0.67kPa). Glass transition temperature Tg 30~38ºC. Refractive index 1.5453. Flash point (open cup) 216ºC. Ignition point about 480~500ºC. It is easily oxidized in the air and the color becomes darker.
APPLICATION
Rosin is an ingredient in printing inks, varnishes, adhesives (glues), soap, paper sizing, soda, soldering fluxes, and sealing wax.
Rosin can be used as a glazing agent in medicines and chewing gum. It is denoted by E number E915. A related glycerol ester (E445) can be used as an emulsifier in soft drinks. In pharmaceuticals, rosin forms an ingredient in several plasters and ointments.
In industry, rosin is the precursor to the flux used in soldering. The lead-tin solder commonly used in electronics has about 1% rosin as a flux core helping the molten metal flow and making a better connection by reducing the refractory solid oxide layer formed at the surface back to metal. It's frequently seen as the burnt or clear residue around new soldering.
A mixture of pitch and rosin is used to make a surface against which glass is polished when making optical components such as lenses.
Rosin is added in small quantities to traditional linseed oil/sand gap fillers, used in building work.
When mixed with waxes and oils, rosin is the main ingredient of mystic smoke, a gum which, when rubbed and suddenly stretched, appears to produce puffs of smoke from the finger tips.
Rosin is extensively used for its friction-increasing capacity in several fields:
