Acetal polymer, often known as POM, is a plastic that uses several monomers in its CH2O repeating units. Acetal, also known as polyformaldehyde or polymethylene glycol, acts like metals and has several other names. As a result, it can be used as a substitute for metals in plastic machining and other industrial applications.
The following characteristics are typical of acetal plastics, whether they are copolymer or homopolymer.
Copolymer acetal (POM-C) and homopolymer acetal (POM-H) are two forms of acetal, each having its own set of characteristics.
POM copolymers, on the other hand, have varied monomeric units inside their CH2O repeating units. They are crucial in injection molding and plastic extrusion because of their high dimensional stability, chemical and abrasion resistance. They come in a wide range of colors, from black and blue to red and green and even brown. Celcon®, Duracon®, Hostaform®, Tepcon®, and Ultraform® are all brand names for the same product.
Acetal Copolymer (POM-C): generic name for all purpose acetal. This grade offers minimal centerline porosity which make it a great application for medical applications.
Delrin®: a trade name for homopolymer acetal (POM-H) offers better mechanical properties than copolymer but has the potential to contain varying densities in the center of the sheet or rod.
Delrin® AF: a homopolymer acetal filled with PTFE to aid in high wear and heat environments. This material is used commonly in moving parts where low friction and long wear life are crucial to performance.
Polyoxymethylene is used in a wide variety of sectors, including:
- Automotive industry: Used in the manufacture of components such as gears, fasteners, door locking systems and bearings.
- Consumer Electronics: Ideal for insulators, connectors and electronic device parts.
- Medical: Used in the production of medical devices such as insulin pens and inhalers, POM is an ideal plastic material for applications requiring high precision.
- Food Industry: Approved for food contact, it is used in milk pumps and coffee taps, thanks to its low absorption and chemical resistance properties.
- Furniture: Perfect for hardware, locks, sliding mechanisms and abrasion resistant components.
