Overview of Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP)

 

Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP) is a new class of high-performance engineering plastics developed in the early 1980s, with the full English name Liquid Crystal Polyester, commonly abbreviated as LCP.

 

The primary synthesis method for LCP is melt polycondensation. Wholly aromatic LCP is typically supplemented with solid-state polycondensation to produce high-molecular-weight products, while partially aromatic LCP is usually manufactured via one-step or two-step melt polymerization. In recent years, continuous melt polycondensation technology for high-molecular-weight LCP has achieved significant development.

 

In its liquid crystalline state, the oriented macromolecular chains of liquid crystal aromatic polyester form an exceptionally regular fibrous structure, delivering unique properties and extremely high product strength comparable to metals and ceramics. Its tensile strength and flexural modulus outperform all types of thermoplastic engineering plastics developed over the past decade. LCP features excellent mechanical properties, dimensional stability, optical properties, electrical properties, chemical resistance, flame retardancy, and processability, along with good heat resistance and a low coefficient of thermal expansion.

 

The properties, processability, and cost of liquid crystal polyester vary depending on the monomers used, and are also affected by the type and loading level of selected fillers.

Properties and Applications of Polyplastics LCP

 

1. Key Properties

 

Liquid crystal polymer resin is generally an off-white or white opaque solid powder, with a density ranging from 1.4 to 1.7 g/cm³.

 

• Superior Mechanical Performance: LCP exhibits high-strength, high-modulus mechanical properties, with inherent self-reinforcing characteristics derived from its molecular structure. Unreinforced LCP can achieve or even exceed the mechanical strength and modulus of conventional engineering plastics reinforced with dozens of percent glass fiber. When reinforced with glass fiber, carbon fiber or other fillers, its performance far surpasses that of other engineering plastics.
• Excellent Thermal & Chemical Stability: LCP delivers outstanding thermal stability, heat resistance and chemical resistance. The creep deformation that plagues most conventional plastics is negligible for LCP, and it also features exceptional wear resistance and friction reduction properties.
• Outstanding Weatherability & Flame Retardancy: LCP has good weather resistance and radiation resistance, with excellent flame retardant performance. It is self-extinguishing and does not sustain combustion, achieving a UL94 V-0 flame retardancy rating, making it one of the specialty plastics with superior fire safety performance.
• Premium Electrical Insulation: LCP boasts excellent electrical insulation properties, with higher dielectric strength and better arc resistance than common engineering plastics. For electrical components, its electrical properties remain unaffected at a continuous service temperature of 200 to 300°C, and it can withstand an intermittent service temperature of up to approximately 316°C.
• Exceptional Corrosion Resistance: LCP products exhibit no corrosion when exposed to 90% concentration acids and 50% concentration alkalis. They also show no dissolution or stress cracking after contact with industrial solvents, fuel oils, detergents and hot water.

 

2. Applications

 

LCP is already widely used in microwave-safe containers, with excellent high and low temperature resistance. It is also utilized in printed circuit boards (PCBs), satellite electronic components, jet engine parts, electrical & electronic and automotive mechanical components, as well as medical applications.

 

When highly filled, LCP can be used as an integrated circuit (IC) packaging material, replacing epoxy resins for encapsulation of coil bobbins; as jackets for fiber optic cable connectors and high-strength components; and as a replacement for ceramics in packing media for chemical separation columns.

 

LCP can also be blended with polysulfone (PSU), polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), polyamide (PA) and other polymers to form polymer alloys. Molded parts made from these alloys feature high mechanical strength, and can replace glass fiber-reinforced PSU and other engineering plastics, delivering improved mechanical performance, service strength and chemical stability. Ongoing research is exploring the use of LCP in exterior panels for aerospace vehicles and exterior braking systems for automobiles.
