Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)

Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), also known as acrylic or organic glass, is often called Agarite in Hong Kong. The number average molecular weight of its cast polymer is generally 2.2×104, the relative density is 1.19-1.20, the refractive index is 1.482-1.521, the moisture absorption is below 0.5%, and the glass transition temperature is 105°C. It has the advantages of high transparency, low price, and easy machining. It is a commonly used glass substitute material.

The design is novel, the technology is advanced, the color is elegant, and the shape is beautiful.

PMMA is light in weight and has a lower density than glass: the density of PMMA is about 1150-1190 kg/m3, which is half of glass (2400-2800 kg/m3). The same size of material weighs only half of ordinary glass and 43% of metal aluminum (a light metal).
PMMA has high mechanical strength: the relative molecular mass of organic glass is about 2 million, it is a long-chain polymer compound, and the chain forming the molecule is very soft, so the strength of organic glass is relatively high, and its tensile and impact resistance is 7 to 18 times higher than that of ordinary glass. The tensile strength is 6 to 7 kgf/mm2, and the compressive strength is 12 to 14 kgf/mm2, which is better than polystyrene in impact resistance; it is also not easy to break. There is a kind of organic glass that has been heated and stretched, in which the molecular chain segments are arranged in a very orderly manner, which significantly improves the toughness of the material. If a nail is driven into this organic glass, even if the nail penetrates, no cracks will be generated on the organic glass, and this organic glass will not break into pieces after being penetrated by a bullet. Therefore, the organic glass after stretching can be used as bulletproof glass and also as a canopy on ** aircraft.
