Surlyn resin is a copolymer made by DuPont using a unique production process. It is a copolymer made by partially or completely neutralizing ethylene-methacrylic acid copolymer through high-pressure free radical polymerization. The acid content in Surlyn resin is about 6% (molar), and the acid is neutralized with sodium, potassium, magnesium or zinc compounds. The density of Surlyn resin is 0.93~0.94 g/cm3. It can be blown and extruded like low-density polyethylene; on the other hand, it has higher strength, oil resistance and adhesion to materials than low-density polyethylene. It was once called transparent polyethylene because of its excellent transparency. These characteristics are the result of ionic bonds in the molecules. Surlyn resin is an ionic polymer based on ethylene-methacrylic acid, which is polymerized by DuPont using a unique production process.
